Vinson Nets Two As Pioneers Fall To Stony Brook

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Junior forward Jamal Vinson (Teaneck, N.J.) scored twice Tuesday night for the Sacred Heart men's soccer team against the Stony Brook Seawolves, but the Seawolves prevailed 4-2 at Campus Field.

After the two teams traded shots on goal in the first nine minutes, Sacred Heart (0-7-1) broke through for the game's first goal. Vinson took a throughball from Ermir Celaj (Brookfield, Conn.) and put a shot over Stony Brook (2-5-1) goalkeeper Tom McMahon to make the score 1-0 in the 11th minute. The Seawolves tied the game in the 15th minute when Thibault Duval took a Danny Espinoza pass at the top of the 18-yard box and put a shot just inside the near post and in the goal. Alejandro Fritz came close to putting Stony Brook in the lead in the 17th minute when he put a shot off the goalpost.

The Pioneers took back the lead in the 22nd minute. Vinson was in the right spot at the right time, knocking home a blocked shot by Mahmoud Kafel (Fairfield, Conn.) to put Sacred Heart up 2-1. Duval answered once again for Stony Brook in the 24th minute, heading in a Keith McKenna cross to make the score 2-2. Sacred Heart maintained possession for a good portion of time after the Seawolves tied the game, putting three shots on goal in a span of nine minutes, forcing McMahon to make three saves. Freshman Matt Manzo (Shelton, Conn.) came the closest to breaking the tie, as his shot in the 30th minute caught a deflection with McMahon scrambling to slap the ball over the crossbar. Stony Brook took the lead in the 41st minute as Jevaughn Vance capped a Seawolves run into the Pioneers' third by letting loose a laser from 25 yards out just under the crossbar, giving Stony Brook a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

Sacred Heart controlled the ball early in the second half, putting three shots on frame in the first 10 minutes, with two coming from Giancarlo Maurello (Rego Park, N.Y.). In the 59th minute, Celaj headed wide a Manzo cross in an attempt to tie the game. Ezra Siyadhuba (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) also had a shot go wide in the 72nd minute. Stony Brook extended its lead in the 81st minute. The Pioneers turned the ball over in their own end, leading to Duval finding Martin Giordano for a goal. Sacred Heart had one shot on goal in the final 10 minutes as a Siyadhuba free kick was guided over the crossbar by McMahon.

Both teams had 20 shots in the game, with the Seawolves putting 14 shots on goal to the Pioneers' 13. McMahon made 11 saves for Stony Brook as Hackett had 10 for Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heat travels to another America East opponent on Saturday, taking on UMass Lowell at 4 p.m.
