NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior midfielder Mahmoud Kafel (Fairfield, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season Friday night against the Yale Bulldogs, but Yale equalized in the final five minutes of regulation to force a 1-1 draw.
Sacred Heart (0-2-1) controlled play early, putting four shots on goal in the first 15 minutes. Kafel had the first chance barely a minute into the match, and added another shot in the 15th minute. Shaquille Saunchez (Kingston, Jamaica) and Ezra Siyadhuba (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) each had shots saved by Yale (0-0-1) goalkeeper Ryan Simpson as well. Yale came close to getting on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when Teddy Mauze put a shot off the post. The Bulldogs then had three shots in a two-minute span. One minute later, Cameron Kirdzik had an attempt at goal saved by Hackett that kept the game scoreless heading into the second half.
The Pioneers broke through for the game's first goal in the 67th minute. Chris Carneiro (Stratford, Conn.) played a long pass to Kafel, who took two touches and fired a strike on goal from 25 yards out. Carneiro's assist is the first of his career. Yale tied the game in the 85th minute when Henry Flugstad-Clarke headed in an Albrecht free kick to make the score 1-1. Albrecht almost won the game in the 88th minute but his header went wide.
