MOON, Penn. –
Hannah Kimmel recorded her fifth double double in seven games, recording game-highs with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but the Sacred Heart University women's basketball team could not overcome 36.2 percent (27-74) shooting as it fell to Robert Morris, 76-65, on Monday afternoon at the Charles L. Sewall Center. With a season-high 12 points,
Katherine Haines was the only other Pioneer to score in double figures for SHU, who falls to an even 8-8 overall and 3-3 in Northeast Conference play. Balanced scoring paced RMU, as Anna Stamolamprou and Rebecca Navarro each scored 14 while Ashley Ravelli added 12. The Colonials improve to 6-11 and 4-2 in league play.
Trailing by nine after trading baskets to begin of the second half, Sacred Heart used an, 11-2, flurry, with nine of those points coming from Kimmel, over the next 2:53 to tie the game with 16:32 remaining. The redshirt junior scored her seventh straight point with a layup ton knot the score, 40-40, for the first time since the 16:29 mark of the first half. Robert Morris would answer though, netting the next five, all by Ravelli, to regain a, 45-40, advantage just 59 seconds later. Those five were the beginning of a, 9-2, run for the Colonials to push its lead back seven, 49-42, after two straight Stamolamprou layups, the latter with 14:11 on the clock.
Kimmel brought SHU with three once more after two foul shots at the 13:20 mark, and Katie Shepard did so again after her layup made the score, 51-48, just 41 seconds later. That basket would turnout to be the closest the Pioneers could get, as RMU once again re-established an eight point lead, 58-50, by scoring in five a row highlighted by a Shakema Dashell three point play with 10:38 showing.
Haines would attempt to spark one last SHU run, draining a jumper with 9:03 left to get back within five, 59-54, but those would be the last points for Sacred Heart until she made another jumper 3:28 later. Over that time period, RMU scored nine straight to push its advantage to, 68-54, after Ravelli's jumper with 6:22 on the clock. The Colonial lead would remain in double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Robert Morris shot 45.3 percent (29-64), including 14-27 (51.9 percent) in the second half to help pull away. The Colonials also made eight threes to SHU's three. The rebounding battle was a tie, 44-44, and assists were also nearly identical, with RMU holding a slight edge, 17-16.
Mikalah Mulrain led Robert Morris with nine rebounds, blocked a game-high four shots, and also scored eight points on 3-3 shooting. Megan Smith added nine on 4-7 from the field.
For the Pioneers, Adaysha Williams dished out a game-high six assists. Gabrielle Washington had eight points, six of which came in the first 4:25.
For the second straight SHU game, the contest got off to a frantic pace. The Pioneers took its second, and last, lead of the game after a Kimmel's second straight three-point basket with 17:28 remaining gave SHU an, 8-7, lead. After Ravellia answered with a three for the Colonials, Washington's ensuing jumper to tie it at ten would be the last tie of the first half. This time it was Navarro who drained a three, with 15:46 left, to give RMU the lead for good.
Sacred Heart got within one twice, the second time after Alissa Tarsi made a layup at the 14:30 mark to make the score, 15-14. From there, SHU would go scoreless over the next 3:14, as the Colonials scored ten straight to go up, 25-14. Navarro began the flurry with a trifecta after the Tarsi basket. The lead reached eleven, a first half high, after Brown nailed a jumper with 11:33 on the clock.
The Pioneers got back in the game with their defense, holding Robert Morris without a point for nearly six minutes after Stamolamprou's jumper with 10:21 left. The next basket in the game would not come until Kimmel made a jumper 2:09 later. Haines then made two straight baskets, the second with 6:21 showing to make the score, 27-24. Smith broke the RMU drought scoring with 4:22 remaining.
Johanna Lopez brought SHU within the two, 29-27, after she made 1-2 from the line 2:49 before the break for her third straight point. From there, the Colonials closed the half with seven straight, with Smith's jumper with 40 seconds left giving RMU a, 36-27, lead.
