Box Score SHELTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team used two goals in each period to power past St. Michael's College, 6-3, on Sunday evening at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Alanna Woodford and Casey Stathopoulos led SHU with three points each, while Amanda Fontaine made 33 saves in net. The Pioneers matched their season-high with six goals to improve to 3-6-0 on the year. Amanda Kempainen and Erin Dwyer led the Purple Knights, who drop to 2-8-0, with two points each.
The eventual game-winner came just over one minute after the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead with 14:43 remaining in the second period. Alex Davis gave SHU a two-goal cushion after she received the puck at the top of the zone, maneuvered around a defender to get in front of the net, and beat the goalie to the left. Heather Daley set up Davis for her second goal of the year. The game-winner came with 13:35 on the clock. Taylor Moreland's second goal of the year, assisted by Megan Finlay, gave SHU a 4-1 lead.
The Purple Knights would cut the lead to two 6:26 before the second intermission. Working on the power play, Maire Bartkus' shot from the top of the zone beat Fontaine to make the score 4-2 going into the locker room.
SHU scored two goals just over four minutes into the third period to put the game away. First, Woodford knocked in a pass in front of net from Stathopoulos, who had skated around net, to regain the three-goal lead for Sacred Heart. The goal extended Woodford's team-high to six goals, while Stathopoulos extended her team-high in assists to nine. Exactly one minute later, the Pioneers extended their lead to 6-2, as Moreland's faceoff win found Daley in front of net. Daley fought off a defender and was able to beat Abby Burke for her first goal of the season.
St. Michael's outshot SHU, 36-27 for the game, including, 19-6, in the second period. Sacred Heart held a, 12-9, edge in the final period. Burke relieved starter Erica Ragazzo after the Pioneers' fourth goal and made 12 saves on 14 shot attempts. Ragaazzo stopped nine of the 13 attempts that she faced. Both teams scored one power play goal, with SHU going 1-2 and St. Michael's going 1-3.
The Purple Knights jumped out to an, 1-0, lead less than one minute into the game. Katherine O'Brien received a pass on a two on one opportunity and one-timed it pastFontaine to take the early lead. SHU answered with 11:23 left in the first period. Stathopoulos, who was in the slot, was on the receiving end of a Woodford pas from behind the net. She was able to one-time it past Ragazzo to even the score. With just over one minute remaining before the first intermission, the Pioneers went ahead, 2-1, when Megan Ofner received a pass from Stathopoulos near the blue line and fired her shot past the goalkeeper for her third score of the year.
Sacred Heart hits the road for a six-game road trip starting on Tuesday at Southern Maine. The puck will drop at 4 pm.
