Sacred Heart struck first in an action-packed opening period, with Cohen opening the scoring off a feed from Addie Bowlby to set the tone early. St. Michael's answered to even the game, but the Pioneers responded in the closing seconds as Ella Holm buried a goal from LaRoche and Koman with just eight seconds left, sending SHU into the first intermission ahead 2–1. Sacred Heart put together a dominant second period, limiting St. Michael's to just one shot on goal while piling on the pressure with a 24–1 advantage in shots on goal and a 36–7 edge in total shots for the period. Ella Holm was everywhere offensively, firing eight shots with six finding the net, as the Pioneers kept play locked in the offensive zone. Despite St. Michael's holding a 14–9 advantage in faceoffs, SHU's control of possession and pace never wavered, and Petruno remained steady in net with five saves through two periods.
