Men's Basketball Hangs On For Exhibition Win Over Bridgeport

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team held a 20-point lead at halftime, but had to hang on for a 101-94 win over the Bridgeport Purple Knights at the Pitt Center Saturday.
Cane Broome led the Pioneers with 26 points, adding five assists. Jordan Allen had a double-double of 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Tevin Falzon had 16 points, while Chris Robinson and Quincy McKnight also scored in double-figures with 12 and 13 points respectively. Sacred Heart shot 56.5% from the field and 86.7% from the free throw line. The Pioneers outrebounded Bridgeport by 10, 39-29.
The Pioneers' frenetic pace was on point early, as Sacred Heart took a 17-7 lead in the first 4:03, capped off by back-to-back fast break layups from Broome. McKnight scored five straight points with 10:20 to play in the first, giving the Pioneers a 29-14 advantage. Sacred Heart took a 20-point lead at the 8:21 mark on a Falzon triple, making the score 36-16. The Pioneers led by as much as 24 in the first half, taking a 60-40 lead at halftime.
Bridgeport opened the second half on a 23-10 run, as a Montana Mayfield basket got the Purple Knights within 10, 73-63, with 10:34 to play. After a pair of Broome free throws put Sacred Heart up 78-70, the Purple Knights scored the next seven points to get within one with 7:39 remaining. Bridgeport was within two with 1:05 to play, but a three-point play by Allen gave Sacred Heart a 97-92 lead and put the game out of reach.
Sacred Heart opens the 2015-16 season on Nov. 13 in the Connecticut 6 at Central Connecticut State. The Pioneers will take on Quinnipiac that night at 5:30 p.m.
