Box Score Sacred Heart Shuts Out Canisius 4-0 To Earn Weekend Split
MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team opened strong with three goals in the first period and cruised past the Canisius Golden Griffins 4-0 at the Milford Ice Pavilion Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey Conference action.
Sacred Heart (3-2-1, 2-1-0 AHC) opened the scoring in the first period as Justin Danforth found the empty net off the rebound of a David Iacono shot with 10:19 remaining. Evan Jasper received an assist along with Iacono. With 1:26 remaining, the Pioneers made it a 2-0 lead over Canisius (2-4-0, 2-2-0 AHC) when Jacob Brightbill took the puck from behind the net and stuffed it by Golden Griffins' goalie Reilly Turner.
The Pioneers then converted a last second goal when Jasper slipped one by Turner just before the first period buzzer sounded. In the second period, Sacred Heart increased the lead to 4-0 as Zach De Concilys won a scrum in the crease and beat new Canisius netminder Simon Hofley 1:40 into the period, with assists from Jasper and Danforth. The two teams played a scoreless third period, with Brett Magnus making nine saves to wrap up his second career shutout.
The Pioneers controlled the action all night, outshooting the Golden Griffins 30-18. Magnus made 18 saves for the clean sheet. Sacred Heart was 0-for-4 on the power play while Canisius was 0-for-2. Jasper had a career-high three points on a goal and two assists while Brightbill had his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist.
Sacred Heart returns to action this Friday night November 6th at Holy Cross. Faceoff is at 7:05 p.m. at the Hart Center.
FIRST PERIOD
- Magnus made a nice glove save with 16:01 remaining.
- With 15:15 to go, Zach Luczyk put a shot just wide from the right circle.
- Zach Sabatini was stopped by a nice pad save by Turner with 7:18 remaining.
- Canisius was held to just four shots in the period.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Golden Griffins replaced Turner with Hofley to start the period.
- De Concilys' goal was the first of his career.
- Kory Kennedy just missed wide left with 13:10 left in the period.
- Canisius' Mike Sabatini couldn't convert an open shot, missing high right with 11:35 remaining.
- Sacred Heart outshot Canisius 13-5 in the period.
THIRD PERIOD
- Jasper hit the post with 14:55 remaining.
- Barliant was denied by a Hofley glove save with 14:30 left.
- With 12:35 remaining, Magnus made a strong stick save off a Canisius shot from the right circle.
- Josh Phillips' slap shot from just inside the blue line went wide right with 10:45 remaining.
