
Men's Hockey Falls At Penn State 8-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team dropped the opening game of its weekend series at Penn State Friday night 8-2 at Pegula Ice Arena.
Penn State (5-2-2) opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game. David Goodwin finished off a 2-on-1 breakaway with Andrew Sturtz to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead 3:29 into the game. Alec Marsh and Dylan Richard then scored goals 48 seconds apart to give Penn State a 3-0 lead with 2:52 to play in the first.
Sacred Heart (5-4-1) rallied late in the period to get within a goal. Kory Kennedy fired a one-timer from Zach Luczyk past Eamon McAdam to make the score 3-1 with 1:02 remaining in the period. Justin Danforth followed 37 seconds later, sniping a shot over McAdam's glove to make the score 3-2 at the first intermission.
The Nittany Lions pulled away in the second period. Sturtz scored with 13:22 to play in the second to make the score 4-2. Kenny Brooks added a shorthanded goal with 11:39 remaining to give Penn State a 5-2 lead. Goodwin capped the scoring in the middle period with a power play goal, giving the host Nittany Lions a 6-2 lead heading into the third. Penn State tacked on two more goals in the third period for the 8-2 win.
The Pioneers were outshot 51-38 Friday night. It was the first time Sacred Heart had allowed over 50 shots since Quinnipiac had 54 in a 5-0 win over the Pioneers on Dec. 30, 2013. Brett Magnus made 24 saves in two periods, as Nathan Perry made 19 in the third period. McAdam had 36 saves for Penn State.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m.;'
FIRST PERIOD
- Magnus had to make a save 35 seconds into the game on a Curtis Loik shot. The freshman goaltender made three saves in the first three minutes.
- Sacred Heart had four shots in the first 10:18 of the period.
- Kennedy's goal was his fourth of the season. Zach Luczyk and Zach De Concilys had the assists.
- Danforth's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season. Evan Jasper and Zach Sabatini assisted on the goal.
SECOND PERIOD
- Sacred Heart outshot Penn State 22-17 in the period, including 6-2 in the first five minutes.
- Jackson Barliant hit a goal post with 17:02 remaining.
- Magnus kept the Pioneers in the game with a save on Richard with 11:50 left.
- Jasper had a shot saved in front of the Penn State goal with 5:49 to play.
- Mike Crocock put a shot wide of the goal as the final horn sounded.
THIRD PERIOD
- Perry made his first collegiate save 31 seconds into the period on a Vince Pedrie shot.
- Danforth was robbed on a point blank shot by McAdam with 16:20 to play.
- Perry made a diving save on a Connor Varley shot with 6:33 remaining.
- Penn State outshot Sacred Heart 21-8 in the third.
