BOSTON – Running without Northeast Conference champion Sean Ferguson, the Sacred Heart men's cross country team managed a 31st place finishing at the NCAA Northeast Regionals at Franklin Park on Friday, improving on its 39th place finish from a year ago. Minus Ferguson, the Pioneers were forced to run the race without an upperclassman, as five sophomores and one freshman competed at the event.
Trevor Guerrerra took over the leading role for SHU, nearly cracking the top 100 in the field of 255. The sophomore finished the 10k event in 32.35.7, good for 101st place. That finish was 107 spots better than in 2014, when Guerrera crossed 208th, and was also the fourth fastest 10k in program history behind only Ferguson, Christopher Connelly, and Matthew Uzenski.
Timothy Loehner also improved on his 2014 finish by nearly 100 spots. One year after running to 246th place, Loehner finished the race on Friday in 152nd. The sophomore's time of 33:15.5 now puts him in 11th place on the program's all-time 10k list.
Also moving onto that list was Andrew Handfield, who was running in his first career NCAA Regional. Also a sophomore, Handfield now stands 12th on the list, as his time of 33:36.4 was good for 171stplace.
Sean Kildare, Joseph Klein and Bryan Reilly rounded out Sacred Heart's six runners at the event. The three crossed in 36:01.8, 37:29.9, and 3736.8.
SHU finishes its season next Saturday at the ECAC/IC41 Cross Country Championships, hosted at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. at 9:30 am.
