SHU Wraps up Non-Conference Play Monday Night at Hofstra

The Sacred Heart men's basketball team wraps up non-conference play at Hofstra on Monday night at 7 pm.
Scouting Hofstra... Hofstra snapped a two game losing streak with a 68-54 victory over Florida Atlantic last Tuesday to improve to 7-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 at home. The Pride come in to the game with high powered offensive that ranks in the top three of the Colonial Athletic Association, averaging 80.6 points 14.9 assists per game. Much of the success is attributed to the three-point shot, as they lead the league with a 39.4 percentage and are third making 9.3 per game. Four players average double figures, led by Ameen Tanksley's 17.4, Juan'ya Green's 16.5 and Brian Bernardi's 15.0, all three of which are top ten in the conference. Green is also atop the CAA dishing out 6.2 assists per contest, while Rokas Gustys paces the league averaging 9.1 rebounds. Leading the three-point attack is Bernardi, whose 49.1 percentage leads the conference and 3.1 makes per game ranks third.
Series History... After the first meeting in the 1969-70 season, the two teams met every year until 1973-74 as Division II opponents. Hofstra won four of those five meetings, including both played in New York, with SHU's lone win came at home in the 1971-72 season. Following the 1974 matchup, the series went on a hiatus until 2013, when the two teams faced each other on on December 4 for the lone Division I matchup. The Pioneers came away victorious 73-59.
Last Meeting... Sacred Heart made a season-high 12 three-pointers on December 4, 2013, as it rolled to a 73-59 win over the Pride. The Pioneers committed just three turnovers in the victory and had had 23 assists on 27 made field goals. Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, Conn.) had a season-high 11 assists with eight points, while Steve Glowiak (New Britain, Conn.) led the Pioneers in scoring for the second consecutive game, making six three-pointers on his way to 18 points.
Career Numbers vs. Hofstra... Both Cole Walton and Tevin Falzon played against the Pride in the 2013 meeting. Walton started and had two points, a rebound and an assist in seven minutes, while Falzon came off the bench to contribute two points and six rebounds in 23 minutes.
-On the other side, Jordan Allen, a Hofstra transfer, played all 40 minutes finishing with ten points, six rebounds and three assists.
All-Time vs. CAA... The Pioneers are 2-8 all-time vs. teams that are currently in the CAA, but only 1-2 in the Division I era. That lone win came against Hofstra:
December 21, 2002: Lost to Northeastern, 94-71
December 4, 2013: Defeat Hofstra, 73-59
November 23, 2014: Lost to James Madison, 79-72
Pioneer Points…
- After averaging just 8.5 points in his previous two games, Cane Broome is scoring a team-leading 20.3 points in the last three games, including a game-high 26 points at Northwestern last Monday.
- Quincy McKnight was the only other Pioneer in double figures at Northwestern with 15 points. He After season-lows of two points and two rebounds at Holy Cross on November 25, he is averaging 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds in December.
- Set to face his former team, Jordan Allen is coming off a season-low 11 minutes played, in which he scored five points, at Northwestern. Despite this, he is still second on the team, and 18th in the NEC, scoring 12.3 points per game.
- Freshman Sean Hoehn made his first career start at Northwestern last Monday, finishing with a career-high four assists and one point shy of a career-high with eight points in 25 minutes. After scoring just 20 points in the first seven games of the season, he has scored 22 in the previous three.
- Sacred Heart is coming off a season-high ten three-pointers. It is just the third time in the past 50 games dating back to 2013-14 that the Pioneers have reached double digit trifectas.
