Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – The Sacred Heart women's ice hockey took a first period lead, and were tied 1-1 heading into the third, but fell victim to four third period goals in a 5-1 loss at Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps SHU's three game unbeaten stretch, as the Pioneers fall to 2-4-1.
Hanna Skelley opened the scoring with her team-leading fourth goal of the season with 6:19 remaining. FPU goaltender Noelle White was able to get a piece of Casey Stathopoulos' shot from the slot, but the puck fell into the crease where Daley was able to jam it in for the opening score. Stathopoulos, who picked up her team-best fourth assist on the goal, got the puck in the slot after Katie Stueve's shot from the left circle hit the post.
Franklin Pierce (7-2-0) evened the score with less than a minute left in the opening period. Nearing the end of a SHU power play, Marisa Ketterman converted a shorthanded opportunity just 44 seconds before the intermission.
After the goalies combined to save all 22 shots in the second period, it took just 30 seconds of the third period for the Ravens to come up with the game-winner on a Karsyn Baker power play score. They doubled the lead less than four minutes later when Michelle Holmes netted an unassisted goal with 15:31 to go, before Alysha Raimo made it 4-1 with a third goal in a span of 6:36 at the 12:54 mark. The Ravens concluded the scoring with another power play goal with 8:38 remaining.
Nicole Magee made 31 saves in the losing effort, as FPU held a 36-21 advantage in shots, including 15-2 in the decisive third period. In a game that had 12 combined penalties, seven of which were on Sacred Heart, the Pioneers went 0-4 on the power play. Meanwhile, FPU went 2-6 and also added the shorthanded score.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at the Sports Center of Connecticut at 4 pm.
