The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season at Fairfield University on Saturday, falling 11-2 in the snow. Caitlin Delaney scored a goal and added an assist for the Pioneers.
Fairfield scored the first three goals of the game, striking for the first tally 50 seconds into the game. Kylie Calandra put the Pioneers on the board at the 16:36 mark of the first-half, converting a pass from Caitlin Delaney. The Stags scored the final six goals of the first-half and the first of the second, to build a 10-2 advantage. Delaney scored her goal on a free position shot with 2:25 to play in the game.
Kelly Keenan played the first 22:00 in goal for the Pioneers, giving up seven goals, against two saves. Paige Hammick minded the net for the final 38:00 of action and made seven saves, while allowing our goals. Chelsey Sidaras earned the win for the Stags, making eight saves in 55:15 of action.
SHU finished with six draw controls in the opener, with Delaney capturing a team-best two. She also had four of the Pioneers five caused turnovers and picked up a team-best four ground balls.
The Pioneers are scheduled to open the home portion of their slate on Wednesday afternoon when they host Iona College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Campus Field.
