The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team scored six second-half goals to rally for an 8-5 win over Holy Cross on snowy Campus Field Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Pioneers to 1-2 on the year, while the Crusaders fall to 0-3.
The Pioneers allowed only just two second-half goals, using a three goals run in the middle of the half to take a 6-4 edge they would not relinquish. The SHU defense held Holy Cross to 5-11 clearing in the second-half and forced 13 turnovers in the stanza.
Sacred Heart fell behind 3-0 as the Crusaders scored three times in the first 13:01. Rookie Averi Farhat (Hollis, N.H.) netted consecutive goals for the Pioneers, scoring unassisted at 15:59 and from a Caitlin Delaney (Cherry Hill, N.J.) pass at 12:22 to bring SHU within a goal, 3-2, a deficit that remained at intermission.
Kylie Calandra (Washington Township, N.J.) tied the score, 4:45 into the second-half, when Delaney tallied her second assist of the game. Laura Ryan answered for the Crusaders 66 seconds later, giving Holy Cross its final lead of the game 4-3.
Jesslyn Joseph (Bolton, Mass.) started a 3-0 SHU run with an unassisted goal at the 22:51 mark, tying the game 4-4. Jenna Liljeberg (Wrentham, Mass.) fed Emily Corrice (Sparta, N.J.) at 17:38 to put the Pioneers in front, 5-4, for the first time. Delaney netted her first goal of the day, from a Corrice pass, with 13:52 to play to give SHU a 6-4 edge. Holy Cross cut the deficit back to one with an unassisted goal from Mary Patalita at the 11:08 mark, but Delaney (3:57) and Joseph (1:49) scored insurance goals to secure the win.
Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned the victory in net for SHU as she made two saves in playing the second-half. Paige Hammick (Avon, Conn.) made her first career start and stopped five shots in her 30 minutes of action. Katie Boyle started in net for Holy Cross and allowed six goals, with seven saves, in 46:08 of action and was credited with the loss. Julia Maloney minded the net for the final 13:52 stopping two shots and allowing two goals.
Delaney finished with a game-high four points, including two tallies, for SHU. Joseph and Farhat each had a pair of goals, while Corrice had a goal and an assist and Corrice finished with an assist and a goal. Joseph led SHU with three caused turnovers and Delaney had three draw controls.
SHU was perfect, 16-16, clearing the ball, and had fewer turnovers, 19-16, in the game. The Pioneers finished with an 18-12 edge in ground balls, while Holy Cross held an 8-7 edge in draw controls. Both teams caused 10 turnovers.
Five different Crusaders scored in the game, with Lissie Russert recording the team's lone assist. Casey Drollinger and Maddie Warwick each had a pair of draw controls, while Ryan finished with four caused turnovers.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Sunday, March 1, when it hosts UMASS-Lowell at 1 p.m. on Campus Field.
