Brian Power picked up his first dual win of the season, and freshman Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and Cory Seltman teamed for a doubles victory, as the Sacred Heart University men's tennis team dropped matches at two tough New Jersey opponents over the weekend. After falling to Monmouth, 7-0, on Friday night, the Pioneers dropped a, 6-1, decision at NJIT on Sunday.
Pilote's and Seltman's victory came at third doubles on Friday night against the Hawks. The two cruised to a, 6-3, victory over their opponents to win their team-high sixth doubles match this season. Sacred Heart nearly earned the doubles point, but Matt Dean and Power were narrowly edged by a Hawk tandem, 7-5, at first doubles.
Freshman Karan Narula narrowly missed out on his first collegiate dual victory on Friday night, dropping a tough three set match at fifth singles. After falling in the first set, 6-2, he bounced back to take the second, 6-3. In the tiebreaker third set, Narula battled till the end before falling 10-8.
Power's victory was in comeback fashion following a 6-4 setback in the first set. He responded by winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, to give SHU its lone point of the weekend at third singles.
SHU looks for its first dual win next Friday, when it faces off with Davison at Yale University starting at 4 pm.
