Women's Lacrosse Earns Second Consecutive Win with 7-6 Decision Over UMass Lowell

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse earned its second consecutive win, defeating visiting UMass Lowell 7-6 on Campus Field Sunday afternoon.  The win improves the Pioneers to 2-2 overall, while the Riverhawks fall to 0-4.

The Pioneers scored three unanswered goals over the final 14:20 of the first-half to take a 5-3 advantage into the intermission.  UMass Lowell started the second-half with back-to-back goals, tying the game 5-5 with 19:05 to play in the game.

Caitlin Delaney scored the Pioneers go ahead goal with 8:45 to play, unassisted, for a 6-5 advantage.  Kylie Calandra tacked on an insurance goal with 5:13 to play, netting a pass from Jenna Liljeberg for a 7-5 advantage.  The Riverhawks answered 61 seconds later, with a Devon McKercher goal, but the SHU defense did not allow another shot to secure the victory.

Kelly Keenan made four saves in 39:39 of action off of the bench, to earn the win for Sacred Heart.  Paige Hammick allowed three goals in her 20:21 as the starter.  Courtney Barrett made five stops in playing the entire game in goal for UMass Lowell.

Liljeberg and Calandra both tallied three points for SHU, with a hat trick for Calandra and two goals and an assist for Liljeberg.  Delaney and Brianna Schussler added goals for the Pioneers, while Emily Corrice, Liana Doyle and Paige DeVine all added assists.

Corrice recorded six caused turnovers for the Pioneers, who finished with 18 on the game. Sacred Heart had nine draw controls and 25 ground balls, with a team-best eight from Corrice.

Emily Wright led the Riverhawks with a pair of goals and Taylor Sokol had a goal and an assist.  Liz Auffant and Micaela Sanborn each had two caused turnovers and Barrett picked up a team-best five ground balls.  Six different Riverhawks had a draw control in the contest.

Sacred Heart travels to Manhattan College on Wednesday, March 4, before returning home on Saturday, March 7 to host Binghamton.
