Farhat Tallies Game-Winner In Closing Seconds Of Women's Lacrosse Rally

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team scored the final five goals of the game to rally for a 9-8 win over host Manhattan College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The victory improves the Pioneers to 3-5 on the year, while the Jaspers fall to 2-7.

Manhattan built the largest lead of the game with a tally from Kaitlyn Cunningham with 7:37 to play in the game, but the SHU defense would not allow another goal the remainder of the way. Jesslyn Joseph started the Pioneers run with a free-position goal with 6:45 to play to cut the deficit to three, 8-5.

Caitlin Delaney netted her second of a game-high four goals 25 seconds later, as she began a personal three goal run. Delaney scored a pass form Kylie Calandra with 3:52 to play and netted a free position shot with 3:087 to play to tie the game.  Rookie Averi Farhat took a pass from Liana Doyle with regulation winding down and scored the game-winner with eight ticks remaining.

Kelly Keenan earned the win in net for SHU, stopping five shots, as she backstopped a defensive effort that allowed only 17 total shots, and just eight in the second-half. The Pioneers caused 11 turnovers in the game, with three from Delaney, as the Jaspers turned the ball over 16 times. Christin Fiorinelli made seven saves in goal for Manhattan.

Delaney scored four times to lead all scorers in the game, while Farhat and Joseph both struck for two goals. Calandra also hd two points, with a goal and an assist. Joseph and Alison Braig each had two draw controls as SHU finished with eight as a team. Delaney had a team-best three ground balls, with SHU capturing a 16-12 advantage in the team category.

Megan Yarusso scored a hat trick for Manhattan, with Claire Roediger tallied two goals, with an assist, as did Cunningham. Caitlin Hynes finished with a game-best five ground balls, to go along with two of the Jaspers four caused turnovers.
