Women's Lacrosse Falls 9-5 To Binghamton

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-5 decision to visiting non-conference foe Binghamton University Saturday afternoon on Campus Field.  The Pioneers fall to 2-3 on the year, while the Bearcats improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Bearcats used a six-goal run, beginning with a Tiffany Ryan goal with 5:43 to play before intermission, through a Brianne Arthur goal 10:03 into the second-half to extend a 2-1 lead to an 8-1 advantage. Averi Farhat (Hollis, N.H.) ended the run with 16:23 to play, with SHU playing a person down. A tally that was answered by Renee Kiviat 24 seconds later to push the advantage back to seven, 9-2.

Sacred Heart scored the final three goals of the game, beginning with Caitlin Delaney's second of the game with 15:18 to play.  Farhat netted her second with 3:09 to play and Jenna Liljeberg tallied the final score with 61 ticks remaining in the game.

The Pioneers finished with a 19-17 edge in ground balls, with three apiece from Delaney and Brianna Schussler (Wantagh, N.Y.) Three Pioneers, including Delaney and Schussler, had two caused turnovers apiece, as SHU finished with 10 for the game.  Farhat and Doyle each had two draw controls, a category Binghamton finished with a 9-6 edge in.

Brianne Arthur finished with a game-high three goals to pace the Bearcats, who received goals from six different players.  Kiviat, Kelsey Michele, and Allie Rodgers all had three caused turnovers for the Bearcats, with 13 as a team.  Kiviat had a team-best four ground balls, while Tiffany Ryan finished with three draw controls.

Erin McNulty made eight saves in earning the win for Binghamton in goal, as well as one ground balls.  Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) started in goal for SHU, stopping five shots, against eight goals allowed in 40:03 of action.  Paige Hammick (Avon, Conn.) stopped one shot and allowed a goal in her 19:57 of action in the crease.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they host Vermont at noon on Campus Field.  That is the first game of a double-header with the SHU men and is the Pioneers Wounded Warrior Day.
