Delaney, Joseph Hat Tricks Not Enough In Women's Lacrosse 7-6 Loss At The Mount

The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team dropped a 7-6 decision to Northeast Conference host Mount St. Mary's Friday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md.  The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Mountaineers improves to 4-9 on the year and 3-1 in conference play.

Jesslyn Joseph and Caitlin Delaney both netted hat tricks for the Pioneers in the contest. All four of the Pioneers NEC games this season have been decided by one goal.

The Mount tallied the games firs three goals, in the first 8:09 to build a 3-0 lead. Joseph got SHU on the board at the 16:16 mark, which was answered by Nicole Lantuh with 10:36 to play in the half to make it 4-1, a score that would hold up until the intermission.

The Mountaineers struck first in the second-half as well, 1:59 into the period, to open its largest lead of the game, 5-1. Caitlin Delaney began the Pioneers come back with a free position goal at the 26:02 mark and Joseph scored 34 seconds later to make the score 5-3. Molly Morris stretched the lead back to three, 6-3, with an unassisted goal. 

Delaney's second 8-meter goal of the game, with 13:02 to play, begin a furious rally that spanned only 92 seconds. Joseph scored at the 12:52 mark and Delaney knotted the game, 6-6, with 11:30 to play in regulation. Lantuh provided the decisive tally with 3:38 to play.

Kelly Keenan minded the net for SHU and stopped 11 shots to go along with two ground balls in the contest.  The Pioneers finished with 14 ground balls, led by the three of Emily Corrice.  Sacred Heart committed 13 turnovers and caused six Mount miscues, led by three caused turnovers from Delaney.

Steph Rurkowski earned the win for Mount with a 12save, two-ground ball effort in net.  Lantuh scored four times, while Morris added a pair of goals. The Mount finished with 23 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers on the day, while committing just 11 miscues of their own.

Sacred Heart concludes the road portion of its schedule on Sunday when it plays at Wagner at 1 p.m.
