Box Score Averi Farhat scored a hat trick and Kelly Keenan made a dozen saves but it was not enough as the Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 double overtime decision at Northeast Conference foe Wagner College on Sunday. The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Seahawks remain unbeaten, 5-0, in the NEC and improve to 8-7 overall.
Farhat completed her hat trick 36 seconds into the first overtime period, netting a Paige DeVine pass and giving SHU an 8-7 advantage. The Seahawks got the equalized from Lauren Ednie with 1:40 left in the first overtime period. Olivia Streilein gave the home team the victory with an unassisted goal 23 tickets into the second overtime.
Streilein scored quickly to open the game for Wagner, netting her first goal only 28 seconds after the opening draw. Farhat got the Pioneers on the board 1:42 later, from a Liana Doyle pass, knotting the score 1-1. A free position goal with 20:29 to play in the first-half put Wagner in front 2-1 but again Farhat answered, this time on a Jenna Liljeberg pass, at the 16:03 mark to tie the game 2-2. Liljeberg found the back of the net 6:18 before the break, for a 3-2 SHU lead, which Kimmy Tumolo answered at the 2:20 mark, sending the game to the break, tied 3-3.
Caitlin Delaney scored the first two goals of the second-half, unassisted at 28:47 and a free position tally at 23:31 to give the Pioneers a 5-3 advantage. Jesslyn Joseph scored a pass from Erin Coutts at 21:23 for the largest margin of the game 6-3. Wagner scored the next four goals, over a 7:33 stretch to take a 7-6 lead with 7:43 to play in regulation. Joseph earned an 8-meter chance with 2:05 to play and netted it, tying the game 707 and forcing overtime.
Farhat led the Pioneers with three tallies, with Delaney and Joseph adding two apiece. SHU finished with five assists, from five different players on the day, with Liljeberg netting a goal and handing out one assist. Keenan played the entire 66:23 in net, making 12 saves and recording a ground balls.
Wagner was led by the three points of Streilein, who netted two and added an assist. Taylor Pastore and Lauren Ednie both scored twice in the game. Katie Ferraro made 10 saves in net and had five ground balls to earn the win.
Sacred Heart finished with a 12-9 edge in draw controls, behind a game-high four from Delaney. Wagner finished with a 23-14 edge in ground balls and outshot the Pioneers 34-26.
The Pioneers close out the regular season at home with a pair of games next weekend. SHU welcomes Robert Morris on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saint Francis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
