FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 4, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team was held scoreless through both games of Saturday's doubleheader by Central Connecticut State losing both games 3-0. The loss drop the Pioneers' overall record to 6-17 and conference record to 1-5, while the Blue Devils improve to 17-7 and 4-0 in Northeast Conference play.
Sophomore Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) pitched all seven innings of the first game striking out six batters along the way. The Blue Devils picked up one run in the first inning, getting an early lead rallying with two outs. Carlson gave up a lead off double to Kat Malcolm who came around to score on an E4. CCSU's only other run came in the fifth innings when Evie Rentzel hit the Blue Devils sixth of seven hits over the left field wall for a solo homerun.
Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) got the start in the circle in game two. The senior gave up all three runs, two earned, over seven innings of work. CCSU got on the board with two runs in the second inning, and tacked on one more in the top of the fourth after Wentworth put down three batters in order in the third. The Blue Devils threatened again in the sixth and seventh innings getting a runner to third each time, but a fly out in the sixth and two ground outs in the seventh held the runners.
Laura Messina pitched two complete games for CCSU allowing the Pioneers just five hits combined.
The Pioneers take to the field again on Tuesday to host Stony Brook in a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
