Box Score Hempstead, N.Y. (August 30, 2015)—The Sacred Heart field hockey team fell to Vermont 2-0 Sunday afternoon in a neutral game at Hofstra. After a scoreless first half, UVM's Lauren Tucker scored twice for the Catamounts in the latter half making SHU 1-1 after the season's first weekend of play. Danielle Gallagher led the Pioneers with two shots on goal.
The Catamounts opened the game with two straight shots in the first five minutes with Mary Altepeter making the first save of the game at 2:45. The Pioneers answered with three consecutive shots on goal, but were unable to score. Throughout the first half, SHU was outshot 10-4, but Altepeter, who made 16 saves the night before, stopped all four that Vermont put on goal.
After both offenses were stifled in the first half, Molly Higgins took a penalty corner for the Catamounts dishing the ball to Aria Robinson, who found Tucker to push the ball past Altepeter for the game's first goal in the 45th minute.
In the 69th minute, Altepter stopped another shot by Tucker, but the freshman got her own rebound this time finding the back of the cage in the final minute of the game cementing the Catamount win.
The Pioneers begin the month of September with taking on two Ivy League opponents on the road in Yale on September 5 and Cornell on September 11.
First Half:
- The Catamounts outshot SHU 10-4 in the first half, but the Pioneers put three of their four shots on goal
- Danielle Gallagher (2) and Nichole Tolli (1) accounted for all three of SHU's on-target shots
- Vermont took six corners compared to SHU's one in the first half
Second Half:
- The Pioneers came out strong in the second half after being outshot in the first with two early shots
- Vermont's Lauren Tucker scored both goals in the second half
- Both teams put three of nine second-half shots on goal
