Pioneers' Rally Comes Up Short Against Saint Joseph's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team opened the home portion of its 2015 season Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Saint Joseph's at Campus Field. Freshmen Alex Mesropyan (Mahwah, N.J.) and Lindsay Corallo (Jackson, N.J.) tallied the two Pioneer goals in the second half.

Saint Joseph's (2-1-0) got on the scoreboard in the 20^th minute when Michaela Finneyfrock knocked in a pass from Taylor Ryan after a Hawks corner kick. The Hawks led 2-0 at halftime after an Emily Gingrich shot from inside the 18-yard box found the net.

Sacred Heart (1-2-0) cut the deficit to one eight minutes into the second half when Mesropyan hit a looping free kick past Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Allison Ebling. The Hawks responded with two goals in a span of six minutes as a Hannah Racis header in the 67^th minute put the score at 4-1. Corallo scored in the 76th minute to make the score 4-2, but that was all the Pioneers could muster.

The Pioneers are back at Campus Field on Friday, September 4 for a 3 p.m. game against Canisius.

FIRST HALF

- SHU had two shots miss the mark in the first seven minutes. Alexis Parlato put one wide after a long ball from Courtney Davis, and Dana Cosmedy had a shot blocked.

- In the eighth minute, Corallo had a shot cleared off the goal line by a Hawks defender.

- Saint Joseph's scored two goals five minutes apart in the first half. Finneyfrock tapped in a corner in the 20^th minute, and Gingrich scored into the top corner of the net in the 25^th minute.

- Melanie DaSilva put a shot wide in the 34^th minute after a long run by Elisa Robiglio from the back.

SECOND HALF

- In the 52^nd minute, the Pioneers almost scored but an offside call nullified a potential tally.

- Mesropyan scored her second goal of the season in the 54^th minute, hitting a free kick from about 25 yards out past the keeper.

- Marissa Christy hit the crossbar in the 58^th minute.

- Corallo's goal in the 76^th minute was the first of her career.
