SHELTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team got a late goal from Cassandra Hanlon, but it was not enough to get the Pioneers past the William Smith Herons Saturday in a 4-1 loss at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
William Smith (7-10-2) took a 1-0 lead with 13:27 remaining in the first period on a Krista Federow power play goal. Federow knocked home the rebound of a Stephanie Hampton shot past Sacred Heart (8-10-2) goaltender Amanda Fontaine. Sacred Heart had 11 shots in the period, but couldn't get one past Herons goalie Laurel Brown. Kiley Fewster put William Smith ahead 2-0 with 0:51 left in the first, pouncing on a loose puck in front of the SHU net.
The Herons struck again on the power play early in the second period. Maura Mulligan put William Smith up 3-0 3:14 into the period, burying a feed from Federow. Brown made that lead hold up, stopping 13 Pioneers shots in the second period. Hanlon finally got Sacred Heart on the board, tapping home a one-timer from Taylor Moreland with 5:03 remaining in the game to make the score 3-1. The Pioneers had a chance to cut the deficit to one with a power play with 2:37 left and pulled Fontaine for an extra skater. However, William Smith scored on the empty net to make the final score 4-1.
Sacred Heart outshot William Smith 35-29 for the game, but was 0-for-7 on the power play. The Herons scored twice on six power plays. Brown made 34 saves for the Herons, while Fontaine had 25 for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday night when Sacred Heart hosts Becker at 6:00 p.m.
