FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart wrestling team nearly rallied from a 16-point deficit Saturday night at the Pitt Center, only to fall 26-16 to the George Mason Patriots.
The Pioneers started the night with a dominant win for freshman Gerard Daly, defeating Ibrahim Bunduka in the 125-pound weight class. Daly trailed 8-3 after the first period, but earned an escape, a takedown, and a two-point near fall to tie it 8-8. He then turned his near fall into a pin and the Pioneers' first six points of the night. George Mason quickly took control in the dual, winning the next five matches. The Patriots had a technical fall, two decisions, and two pins to go up 23-6.
Sacred Heart was able to bounce back and put more points on the board with three consecutive wins. The first win came from Johnny Vrasidas defeating Ryan Forrest by decision 8-2 in the 174-pound match. In the next two matches, Elliott Antler overpowered Austin Harrison in the 184-pound match by decision 11-5 and Sasha Oliinyk defeated Cameron Houston by major decision 9-1. In the last match of the night, Duke Sherwood lost to Matt Voss in a close 3-2 bout.
