FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart football team looks to even up its Northeast Conference record Saturday when it travels to Central Connecticut for a 12 p.m. game at Arute Field.
Last week, SHU moved to 6-2 on the season and 1-2 in the NEC after a 38-17 loss to Saint Francis U at Campus Field. The Pioneers overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter to tie the game 17-17 with 8:42 left in the third quarter on a four-yard touchdown pass from RJ Noel to Andrew O'Neill. The Red Flash came back and scored 21 unanswered points on three Zack Drayer touchdown passes to Kamron Lewis.
Noel is one of two Pioneers approaching SHU career records. He enters this week's game with 8,606 career passing yards, putting him 198 yards away from passing Dale Fink for the SHU career passing yards record. Noel is also five touchdowns away from tying Fink's record for career passing touchdowns. The fifth-year quarterback is also two touchdowns away from 100 career total touchdowns. Senior linebacker James Rentz, with 25 career sacks, is two away from tying Odain Mitchell's record of 27. Rentz is fifth nationally among active FCS players in career sacks.
Central Connecticut (1-7, 0-3 NEC) leads the series against the Pioneers 10-8 after last season's 26-10 win at Campus Field. The Blue Devils' victory snapped SHU's four-game winning streak in the series dating back to 2011. CCSU is still searching for its first NEC win of the season after a 19-6 loss at Robert Morris last week. The Blue Devils outgained the Colonials 285-132 but allowed nine points on defense on a safety and a pick six. Quarterback Jacob Dolegala was 30-for-50 passing for 253 yards but had two interceptions. He is second in the NEC in total offense at 248.2 yards per game and third in passing with 249.6 yards per game.
