Box Score Winchendon, Mass. – Freshman defender Jayne Lewis scored in the second period on Friday night as the Sacred Heart women's hockey team tied to Franklin Pierce 1-1.
The first period saw
both goalkeeper's make big saves to keep the game scoreless. Franklin Pierce had a breakway chance at the 14:30 mark. Ketterman with a shorthanded breakaway after picking off a pass, made her way to the right post and drew a penalty, but Kane made the save.
At the 18:00 mark, SHU's Victoria Grimmer had a partial break off the right wing. The Freshman cut across the slot and deked to the left post, but O'Neil made the pad save.
In the second period Franklin Pierce opened the scoring at the 16:17 mark with a goal from Meg Gilbride, assisted by Nina Danforth. The Pioneers responded just 36 seconds later with
Katie Stueve finding Lewis to tie the score 1-
1.
Lewis's goal would prove to be the final goal of the game with both teams unable to score in the third period taking the game to overtime. SHU outshot FPU 3-1 in overtime but both teams could not be seperated with the game ending in a tie.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series Saturday at 2 p.m.
