FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team recorded season-highs of ten service aces and .350 hitting in a sweep of Holy Names on Thursday afternoon at the William H. Pitt Center. It is the second straight win for the Pioneers, who improve to 5-11 on the year.
The ten services aces are the most for SHU in a three set match since it had ten at Baruch on January 28, 2012. All four Pioneers to record five or more kills hit at least .48, led by Doug Dzema's five kills on .571 hitting. Michael Comens posted a match-high 12 kills on .474 hitting, while also leading the match with a season-high six digs.
Christopher DeLucie recorded double digit kills for a sixth straight match, finishing with 11, while Austin Arcala had eight kills on .467 hitting and added a career-high six services aces, all of which came in one serving rotation in the third set.
Kyle Cazares paced Holy names with nine kills on .474 hitting and Trevor Robison matched Comens with six digs.
Sacred Heart continues a six-match homestand next Thursday when Cal Baptist visits the William H. Pitt Center for a 7 pm start.
How it Happened
- First Set (25-20)- Sacred Heart looked to be on its way to an easy first set win when Comens followed an Eduardo Zardo ace for an early 10-2 lead. Holy Names slowly chipped away, getting as close as three five separate times, including as late as 23-20. The Pioneers would finally put the set away with back-to-back back kills by Comens and DeLucie.
- Second Set (26-24)- In a reversal of the first set, it was Holy Names jumping out to an early lead, which reached as high as five points five times, including as late as 13—8. The advantage was still four at 20-16 before SHU made its move with a 6-1 run, the final three points coming on HNU errors, to take just its second lead, 22-21. The Hawks quickly came back though, forcing a set point by scoring three of the next four. The Pioneers responded with three consecutive kills, with one each from Comens, DeLucie and then Arcala.
- Third Set (25-12)- Arcala's spectacular serving performance officially put the match away for good. With the score at 11-8, a Dzema kill brought service back to Sacred Heart and Arcala, who then proceeded to rattle off the six consecutive service aces, capping seven straight points for an 18-8 score.
