Pioneers' Second Half Rally Comes Up Short At Binghamton

Box Score

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team overcame a slow start to get within a goal of the Binghamton Bearcats Sunday at Bearcat Sports Complex, but fell 9-7.

Alyssa Pearce led the offense with a three-point game, scoring two goals and picking up an assist. Jenna Liljeberg scored two goals, and Caitlin Delaney had two assists and a game-high eight groundballs.

Sacred Heart (3-4) took the lead against Binghamton (4-4) on Liljeberg's goal ten minutes into the first period. The Bearcats extended their lead to 5-1 just 1:48 into the second half as Miriam Ghabarou was the fifth different player to score for Binghamton. SHU ended the Binghamton run on an Emily Kick goal at the 24:44 mark to make the score 5-2. Binghamton took its largest lead of the game with 20:42 remaining when Valerie DeNapoli's second straight goal put the Bearcats ahead 7-2.

The Pioneers got back into the game with a 4-0 run. Pearce started the run with a goal at the 20:11 mark. Averi Farhat then scored with 14:53 remaining to make the score 7-4. Binghamton extended its lead to 9-6 with 1:59 to go on goals by Rebecca Golderman and Sophia Racciatti. SHU only managed one goal in the final two minutes to make the final score 9-7.

Sacred Heart was outshot by Binghamton 26-14 and lost the groundball battle 23-20. Paige Hammick made nine saves for SHU. The Pioneers caused 11 turnovers on the day, but turned the ball over 16 times. Golderman and DeNapoli lead the Bearcats scoring with two goals apiece.
