HUMACAO, P.R. – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team continued play on its Spring Break trip on Monday afternoon, getting swept 4-0 by East Carolina in "clinch-clinch" play. The Pirates won the doubles point before winning the first three singles matches to finish, therefore clinching the sweep of SHU, who is now 3-6 this season.
After five minutes of doubles play, rain forced a two-hour delay. When the two teams returned to the court, East Carolina (10-4) took both the second and third doubles matches by a score of 6-1. Katie DeRienzo and Taylor Gurda were tied with their challengers, 4-4, at first doubles
Action continued with first through fourth singles, where the Pirates won second, third and fourth singles in straight sets to end the match. DeRienzo took seven games in the unfinished first singles to lead Sacred Heart, while Claudia Ruiz was up on her opponent 3-1 in the first set of her unfinished sixth singles match.
