Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team lost its second consecutive conference game Friday, falling to the Wagner Seahawks 8-6 at Campus Field.
The Pioneers got their six goals from six different goal scorers. In total, eight different Pioneers had a point Friday.
Caitlin Delaney led SHU with two groundballs, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.
Paige Hammick made seven saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (5-6, 1-2 NEC) needed just nine seconds to score the first goal. Averi Farhat grabbed the opening draw control and scored to put the Pioneers ahead 1-0. Wagner (4-8, 2-1 NEC) then scored the next three goals, as Taylor Pastore's goal at the 18:28 mark put the Seahawks up 3-1. Alyssa Pearce closed the gap to one with her goal at the 12:36 mark, making the score 3-2. Wagner then got back-to-back goals from Shea Gegan and Tori McGrath to go up by three, 5-2, with 5:05 remaining in the half. The two teams traded goals in the final five minutes as the Seahawks took a 6-3 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers closed the deficit to one in the second half. Goals by Delaney and Jenna Liljeberg made the score 6-5 with 13:07 to play in the game. After Olivia Streilein put Wagner back ahead by two with 10:53 to play, Jesslyn Joseph scored at the 5:29 mark to put the game back in reach for Sacred Heart at 7-6. That goal, however, would be SHU's last of the game. Wagner scored with 1:16 left to take an 8-6 lead to win the game by two.
Wagner outshot Sacred Heart 25-14 and held a 14-9 edge in groundballs. SHU won 12 of the 16 draw controls. Gegan led all players with three points, scoring two goals with an assist. McGrath also had two goals.
The Pioneers are home on Sunday, April 17th at 1 p.m. against Mount St. Mary's for Senior Day.
FIRST HALF
- Farhat's goal nine seconds into the game was the fastest goal for the Pioneers this season. She also scored 10 seconds into last Friday's win at Saint Francis U.
- SHU scored first for the fourth straight game.
- Liana Doyle scored her third goal of the season at the 4:30 mark, her first goal since March 18th against La Salle.
SECOND HALF
- Delaney's free position goal at 16:48 was her team-leading 29th goal of the season.
- Kylie Calandra had her 10th assist of the season on Liljeberg's goal at the 13:07 mark.
- Wagner had only two turnovers in the second half.
