Pioneers Earn Home Win Over Brown 13-9

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Led by four goals from Jesslyn Joseph and Alyssa Pearce, the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team earned a 13-9 win over the Brown Bears Saturday at Campus Field. 

Caitlin Delaney filled the box score with three goals, two assists, seven groundballs, and six caused turnovers. Paige Hammick make nine saves in goal.

Sacred Heart (4-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead 3:47 into the game on goals by Delaney and Emily Kick. Brown (4-6) responded with a three-goal run to take the lead, with Lauren Toy's goal at the 24:30 mark giving the Bears a 3-2 lead. Joseph then scored back-to-back goals to put SHU back in front 4-3 with 20:57 to play in the half. Pearce then scored two straight to extend the lead to 6-3 at the 12:57 mark. Brown cut the deficit to two before halftime, as Hafsa Moinuddin made the score 6-4 with 7:10 to play in the first.

As they did in the first half, the Pioneers scored the first two goals of the second half. Pearce and Delaney scored 46 seconds apart to give SHU an 8-4 lead with 26:15 to play. After Jillian Lee got tbe Bears within three, 8-5, at the 22:56 mark, Joseph and Averi Farhat scored goals 40 seconds apart to put the Pioneers up 10-5 with 19:41 remaining. The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game with 4:30 to play as Delaney's third goal of the day gave SHU a 13-7 advantage.

Brown outshot Sacred Heart 24-20 for the game and held an 18-6 advantage in draw controls. SHU had a 16-12 edge in groundballs and forced 19 Brown turnovers. Moinuddin led the Bears with three goals, while Lindsey Repp added a pair of tallies. 

The Pioneers open Northeast Conference play on Friday, April 8 at Saint Francis U at 3 p.m.

 

FIRST HALF

- Kick's goal at the 28:46 mark was her second of the season. She also recorded her first assist of the season with 23:29 remaining on Joseph's first goal of the game.

- SHU went on a 4-0 run over 10:32 to take a 6-3 lead at the 12:57 mark.

- Neither team scored in the final 7:10 of the first half.

- Hammick made five of her nine saves in the first half. 

SECOND HALF

- The Pioneers outscored Brown 5-2 in the first 15:00 of the half.

- Delaney's two goals in the half gave her 24 for the season to lead SHU.

- SHU forced 10 turnovers in the second half.
