Box Score LORETTO, Pa. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team won its fourth game in its last five, opening Northeast Conference play with a 14-10 win over Saint Francis U at DeGol Field.
Caitlin Delaney led the offense with a seven-point game, scoring four goals and picking up three assists. Jesslyn Joseph also had four goals and Alyssa Pearce added a hat trick and an assist. Paige Hammick made 10 saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (5-4, 1-0 NEC) opened the scoring against the Red Flash on Averi Farhat's goal just ten seconds into the game. Saint Francis U (3-7, 0-1 NEC) tied the game 13 seconds later on a tally by Lindsay Ingram. The Pioneers went a 3-1 run to take a 4-2 lead at the 19:42 mark on a Delaney free position goal. The Red Flash responded with two Katie Schaaf goals 28 seconds apart to tie the game 4-4 with 18:01 remaining. SHU then went on another run, scoring three of the next four goals to take a 7-5 lead with 5:18 left in the first on a Kylie Calandra goal. Ingram got Saint Francis U within one at halftime, scoring with 1:44 remaining to make the score 7-6.
After scoring twice in the first half, Pearce continued her scoring by quickly gaining her hat trick 1:10 into the second half, pushing the Pioneers lead to 8-6. Joseph and Delaney added their own hat-tricks during a 4-2 run during the second half to increase SHU's lead to three, 11-8, with 13:50 remaining in the game. With just under 10 minutes left, Delaney and Farhat scored back-to-back to give SHU its largest lead at five, 13-8.
Sacred Heart was outshot by Saint Francis U 27-26 and lost the groundball battle 14-11. The Pioneers forced 12 Red Flash turnovers while committing 10. Lindsay Ingram led the Red Flash scoring with three goals as Jessica Mazzur had three assists.
The Pioneers continue NEC action at Robert Morris on Sunday, April 10th at 1 p.m.
