SHU Fencing Returns To Action At Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Sacred Heart men's and women's fencing teams participated in their first competition of the new year Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn.
Women's Recap
The women's team opened Saturday with a 14-13 win over Drew. SHU trailed 11-7 after the foil and epee bouts, then won seven of the nine saber bouts to win the dual. Julia Greene won all three of her bouts in saber. Greene then went 2-1 against both North Carolina and NYU, but the Pioneers fell to the Tar Heels 23-4 and 20-7 respectively. Sacred Heart closed the day with 21-6 losses to both Northwestern and Temple, and a 24-3 loss to the host Penn. Samantha Abbott was 11-7 in epee with Greene going 10-8.
Men's Recap
The men's fencing team started the day with a close 14-13 loss to North Carolina. The foil and epee squads both went 6-3. Tyler Endee was a perfect 3-0 in foil, as was Dante Centeno in epee. SHU then beat Drew 17-10 in its next match. Foil won eight of nine bouts, led by Endee and James Turner IV who each went 3-0. James Hosey won all three of his epee bouts. The Pioneers wrapped up its day with a 22-5 loss to Duke and an 18-9 loss to Penn. Centeno was 7-2 on the day with Cody Richard going 6-3 in epee.
The Pioneers are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Yale.
