South Bend, Ind. – First year men's fencer Tolga Aslan closed out his rookie campaign with a strong showing at the NCAA Championships after qualifying for one of 24 spots in Saber following his regional performance where he finished sixth overall.
The NCAA Men's fencing championship consists of two-days of action where each participant in a discipline competes against the other 23 qualifiers. Overall, Aslan finished 13th out of 24 with an 11-12 overall record, falling just short of earning All-American status.
"Tolga had his first go at one of the highest levels of fencing competition in the world," said head coach Khristopher White. "He had very strong moments in a meet where the pressure of the event causes a lot of great fencers to crumble. There are Olympians and World Champions competing in this event, so just being able to qualify is already a testament of what Tolga has accomplished this year as a freshman."
"I'm positive that now that he has been exposed to it, that he will step up to the challenge and be hungry to qualify again. He barely missed out on becoming an All-American and he took it personally, he will be back."
Among the highlights for Aslan was a victory over St. John's Adham Moataz who finished second overall in the final standings after falling to Notre Dame's Ahmen Hesham who took home the title in Saber. Overall, three of Aslan's 11 victories came over opponents who finished above him in the standings, including Notre Dame's Radu Nitu (seventh) and Wagner's Flavio Vinsi (12th).
