
Aslan’s Five Points Leads Pios at NYU Tri-Meet

New York, N.Y. – First-year Saberist specialist Tolga Aslan highlighted the Sacred Heart men's fencing team in a pair of matches against Columbia and New York University in a tri-match hosted by NYU. As a team, the Pioneers dropped both matches on the day by scores of 22-5 against the host Bobcats and 17-10 against the Lions.
Against Columbia, the Pioneers finished with 5-4 decisions in both Sabrer and Foil. In Sabre, Aslan and Jonathan Morales split the four points evenly. Aslan opened up his evening with back-to-back wins while Morales took his two decisions in his second and third bouts. In Foil, it was David Belluomo who took two of the four points in the discipline.
Against NYU, Aslan took the momentum from his earlier two wins to finish a perfect 3-0 against the host school as he led his teammates to a 5-4 victory in the discipline. Aslan opened up the match with a 5-2 decision against the Bobcats Surya Mattoo and followed that with a 5-4 win against Jerry Pan. To complete the sweep, the rookie earned a 5-3 victory over Matthew Zhou.
Assisting Aslan in earning the Sabre victory was Morales who added a pair of wins to close out his day with four points combined against the Lions and Bobcats. Morales' two wins came back-to-back against Vincent Hong and Mattoo.
The Pioneers men's fencing team returns to action with the rescheduled NFC Championships scheduled for Saturday, February 28 which will now be hosted by Boston College.
