
Aslan Named Rookie of the Year, Men’s Fencing Third at NFC Championship

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – First Year Sabreist Tolga Aslan was tabbed the Northeast Fencing Conference Rookie of the Year as he helped lead the Pioneers to a third place finish at the Conference Championships this past weekend.
The Rookie of the Year honor for Aslan was one of two accolades for the first year as he was also one of two Pioneers to earn All-Conference distinction with a spot on the All-Conference First Team. Joining him with All-Conference honors was fellow first year and Sabre specialist Jonathan Morales who was named to the All-Conference Second Team.
Combined, the pair helped marshal the Pioneers to a 3-2 record at the NFC Championships with wins over Brandeis (16-11), Vassar (17-10) and Wheaton (19-8), including going a perfect 5-0 in Sabre, earning NFC Top Sabre Squad accolades.
Across the five matches on the day, Aslan finished 10-1, including ga 3-0 sweep against the host school Boston College. Morales also earned a 3-0 sweep, his coming against Wheaton College, while he closed out the day a combined 8-3.
In addition to the success in Sabre, the Pioneers Epee also stood out against Wheaton where they posted a 9-0 sweep against the Lyons with Declan McAdoo, Damian Nguyen and Stephen Scapicchio also finishing the match a perfect 3-0.
In the Pios 17-10 win over Vassar it was Foil that stood out in addition to Sabre with the Pioneers posting another perfect 9-0 performance. Against the Brewers it was the trio of Chaissen Costello, David Blluomo and Alexander Ligos that all combined to go 3-0.
The Pioneers will return to action this coming weekend when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and the home of Vasser College, Walker Field House, as the Brewers host the NCAA Northeast Regional. All of the action is scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
