Flaherty Record And Somers Wins Lift Swimming & Diving To Dual Meet Wins

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team went 2-1 on Saturday at a quad meet hosted by Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. The effort improved the Pioneers to 2-3 on the season in dual meet action and are 1-2 in NEC competition.

SHU picked up its first NEC victory of the season with a 129-84 win over St. Francis Brooklyn, while defeating the hosts Gaels, 126-101.  The Pioneers fell 145-89 to Wagner.

Sophomore Lauren Somers earned three wins, capturing first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Margaret Flaherty lowered the school 1,000 freestyle record for a second consecutive week and Nicole Pergolotti recorded a career-best score on the one-meter board.

The Pioneers return to action on October 28 when they host NEC foe LIU Brooklyn and Stony Brook in a 12:30 double dual meet at McCann Natatorium.

Sprints

  • Somers captured the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.30 and won the 100 with a swim of 52.28
  • Kim Hylan touched fifth in the 200 freestyle, finishing at 2:00.38

Strokes

  • The Pioneers swept the 200 butterfly in the dual with Iona, turning the tide in favor of SHU
  • Jessie Poole paced the Pioneers effort in the 200 breaststroke, finishing third at 2:29.04
  • Fiona Maxwell was the Pioneers top swimmer in the 200 fly, touching at 2:13.44, followed by Nikole Rudis (2:14.40) and Emily Peter (2:14.57)
  • Anna Brown placed fifth in the 200 backstroke at 2:13.74

Distance

  • Flaherty notched the second-fastest time in the 1,000, finishing at 10:38.13, shaving more than seven seconds off her time from a week ago
  • Flaherty was also second in the 500 free, touching at 5:12.06

Diving

  • Pergolotti placed fifth on the one-meter board, record 173.65 points for her personal-best

Relays

  • Hylan (55,73), Flaherty (54.85), Peter (57.27) and Somers (51.49) combined for first-place in the 400-freestyle relay, finishing at 3:39.34
  • The Pioneers 400-medley relay placed third with Emily Shenk (58.18), Kaylyn Cuozzo (58.90), Victoria Catizone (57.71) and Shanna Haddow (58.18) teaming up for the effort
