Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A balanced scoring attack led the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats Wednesday in the home opener at Campus Field.
Five different Pioneers had two goals Wednesday. Alyssa Pearce and Caitlin Delaney both had two goals and two assists. Erin Coutts, Emily Kick, and Sydney Ericson each had two goals. Averi Farhat and Cassie Cesario both had a goal and an assist. Brenna Betsch led SHU with three groundballs as Elizabeth Small had two groundballs and three caused turnovers. Paige Hammick made nine saves in goal.
Sacred Heart (2-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Caitlin Delaney put the Pioneers on the board at the 26:43 mark, with Sydney Ericson making the score 2-0 with 23:15 remaining. Erin Coutts scored with 21:36 left in the half to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0. Averi Farhat capped the run with her goal at the 12:20 mark. Quinnipiac (1-2) got two goals from Ashley Bobinski in the final seven minutes to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, by halftime.
The Pioneers took back a four-goal lead early in the second half. Goals by Coutts and Cassie Cesario, her first of her career, put SHU ahead 6-2 with 21:43 remaining. After a Bobcats goal made the score 6-3, Pearce and Delaney scored back-to-back goals 1:25 apart to give the Pioneers an 8-3 lead. Quinnipiac rallied with four straight goals over the next 8:43 to cut the deficit to one, 8-7. SHU went on a 4-0 run of its own, as two Emily Kick goals put the Pioneers in front 12-7 with 2:24 to go.
Sacred Heart outshot Quinnipiac 27-22 and had 19 groundballs to the Bobcats' 18. Both teams had 11 draw controls. Bobinski was one of four Quinnipiac players with two goals Wednesday. Goalie Kyle Larkin made nine saves.
The Pioneers are back in action next Wednesday, March 8 against Iona at Campus Field at 3 p.m.
