Pioneers Fall to Stony Brook in Series Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart baseball team opened its four-game series against Stony Brook with a 9-3 setback on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field. The Seawolves (12-14) jumped out to the early lead with back-to-back three-run innings against the Pioneers (7-19).

Stony Brook jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Andrew Gazzola with runners on the corners. Dylan Resk would score on a wild pitch by Pioneers starter James Taubl and Bobby Honeyman finished off his at bat with a RBI single to right field. The Seawolves continued to score in the fourth as Tobey Handley ripped an RBI triple down the first base line. He would score on Brandon Janofsky's sacrifice fly in the next at bat. Honeyman extended the lead to 6-0 with his second RBI single of the game.   

SHU looked to answer back in the top of the fifth as junior Anthony Capozziello got things going with his leadoff single up the middle. He would advance to third after a passed ball and ground out. Junior Cody Doyle drove him in with a two-out single RBI to centerfield to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard. Stony Brook would get one run back on a RBI double Handley RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

The Pioneers responded in the top of the seventh as Capozziello once again started things off with a single up the middle. After he stole second, junior Dan Schock doubled the 3-2 offering from Turcotte to bring the score to 7-2. Senior Jake Friar plated the Pioneers third run of the game with the RBI single to right center field. Stony Brook put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on the RBI single by Handley and another sacrifice fly by Janofsky. 

Capozziello led the Pioneers with his 2-for-3 night at the plate, good for his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Doyle went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Taubl dropped the decision in his eighth start of the year. Sophomore Hal Shaw made his first appearance on the bump for the Pioneers in the eighth inning, recording his first two career strikeouts.

The Pioneers will continue the series with the Seawolves tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
