Pioneers Drop Doubleheader at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—The Sacred Heart baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves (14-14) took game one, 11-5 and walkoff 6-5 victory over the Pioneers (7-21) in game two.

Game One

Top of the order came through for the Pioneers in the top of the first as junior Alex Perry and senior Ted Shaw picked up back to back singles with one out. They then executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Senior Keith Klebart picked the RBI on a groundout to shortstop, giving SHU the 1-0 lead. The Pioneers added two more in third as freshman Elijah Brown lead the inning off with a single. He would score on Perry's RBI double into the gap in left center field.  Shaw then picked up his second hit of the game, moving Perry to third. Setting up Klebart to deliver the RBI single through the left side.

Stony Brook would get one back on the bottom of the third on the sacrifice fly to left field by Brandon Janofsky off senior John Sostarich with the bases loaded. The Seawolves continued to comeback in the bottom of the fourth as Dylan Resk smacked a two-run home run down the left field like to tie the game at 3-3. They would take the lead on a sacrifice fly by Toby Handley and another run on an error by Sostarich to bring the score to 5-3. Freshman Kevin Czapelski picked up the strikeout in relief to escape the inning.

SHU fought back in the next inning as junior Anthony Capozziello recorded the one out double. He would score on an RBI single by freshman Austin Markmann. The Pioneers proceeded to load the bases on a single by Czapelski and a walk by junior Cody Doyle. Freshman Stephen Thibault tied the game up at 5-5 with his sacrifice fly. The Seawolves plated five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth off Czapelski to take the lead once again. They would add one more in the sixth on Resk's second home run of the game. Brown, Perry and Shaw led the Pioneers with two hits apiece. Perry also led the Pioneers with two runs scored.


Game Two

The second game of the afternoon got off to a slow start as both starters held the bats in check. SHU got things going in the fourth inning as they plated four runs on five hits. After Capozziello reached on a fielder's choice, SHU stringed together four straight hits off Greg Marino with junior P.J. DeFilippo starting things with a single through the right side. Shaw drove in the first Pioneers run with his RBI single to left field. Markmann followed suit with his single to right field to score DeFilippo, he advanced to second on the throw home. Senior Jake Friar continued the inning with his two RBI single to right field to give SHU the 4-0 lead.

Stony Brook rallied in the bottom of the fourth with a three RBI double by Sean Buckhout to cut the deficit to 1.  Casey Baker then gave the Seawolves the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run over the right field fence. SHU battled back in the top of the sixth as Shaw led off the frame with a walk, he then advanced to third on Markmann's single to right field. After two strikeouts by reliever Aaron Pinto, a wild pitch scored Shaw from third to tie the game at 5-5.

The Pioneers looked to go ahead in the top of the seventh with Perry on second with one out, Capozziello stepped in to pinch hit and singled to right field. Perry was gunned down by right fielder Chris Hamilton at home for the second out. Sophomore reliever Hal Shaw was able to get a fielder's choice groundout to home and a big strikeout to Janofsky to get out of the bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth. Stony Brook started off the ninth with a Baker walk, he advanced to second on Bobby Honeyman's sacrifice bunt. Up to the plate stepped Resk, who took the 3-2 offering down the left field line to score the game wiining run at 6-5 in extra innings.

Markmann led the Pioneers at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3. Friar had a team high two RBI and Shaw recorded two runs scored. Teller gave up two earned runs in five and a third while striking out six. Graduate Mike Lembo picked up three strikeouts in an inning and two third in relief. 

The Pioneers look to end their seven-game losing skid tomorrow as they wrap up the four-game series against the Seawolves tomorrow. First pitch for the home opener at Harbor Yard is 3:30 p.m.
