Box Score 2 NEW BRITAIN, Conn.—The Sacred Heart Baseball team was unable to overcome the high powered CCSU offense as the Blue Devils swept the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 11-5 in game one and 9-1 in game two. The Pioneers (16-28, 9-9 NEC) were out hit 22-13 by the Blue Devils (25-18, 14-5 NEC) at CCSU Baseball Field.
Game One
The Blue Devils got things going with a two run first inning on a sacrifice fly by TT Bowens and a Mitch Guilmette RBI single through the right side. CCSU then extended the lead by three as Brendan Costello roped a leadoff home run of sophomore Brent Teller in the bottom of the third. Franklin Jennings then added a two-run triple to bring the score to 5-0.
The hitting continued for CCSU as they added four more runs to push the lead to 9-0 heading into the top of the seventh. Lefthander Brendan Smith held the Pioneer offense that blasted 43 runs the previous weekend against Mount St. Mary's, hitless over the first six frames.
Senior Keith Klebart changed that up with a two-out double down the left field line off Smith. Redshirt junior PJ DeFilippo drove him in with his RBI single to center field, putting SHU on the scoreboard. Freshman Austin Markmann then smashed his fourth home run of the season to left center field to bring the score to 8-3. Junior Alex Perry extended the inning with his single followed by Cody Doyle's double down the left field line putting runners on second and third. Junior Dan Schock stepped in as a pinch hitter and delivered the two RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to three.
But CCSU would pull away with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the 11-5 win and held on as Tom Curtin only allowed one hit over the final two innings.
Game Two
The second game of the twinbill was slow to get going as both teams had only one hit apiece through the first three innings. Guilmette plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as he picked up the RBI groundout. CCSU added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk yielded by sophomore Baylor Sundahl. The Blue Devils plated two more in the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-0 lead.
Schock got the Pioneers on the board with his leadoff home run off Mike Appel in the top of the seventh. Schock now has 15 home runs in his career to tie for ninth in program history. The responded with one run in the bottom of the seventh and four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the second game 9-1. Jared Gallagher held the Pioneers hitless over the two and two third innings.
Senior Ted Shaw led the Pioneers with a 2-for-3 afternoon with one walk. He currently has 98 career walks, one back of Zack Short for the all-time career walks record.
The Pioneers and Blue Devils wrap up their season series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
