CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team played its third five-set match of the season Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-25, 13-15) to the American Eagles on the first day of the Harvard Invitational.
Makayla Dole led SHU (1-3) with 21 kills, adding 13 digs for a double-double. Liisel Nelis had 20 kills and hit .255. Kiki Robinson had 47 assists and nine digs. Madi Pope led SHU with 16 digs.
First Set: American 25-15
- SHU took a 2-0 lead on kills by Robinson and Julia Murawinski, but American (2-3) went on an 8-1 run to take an 8-3 lead.
- Trailing 11-4, SHU got a kill from Nelis and a block by Nelis and Murawinski to get back within five at 11-6.
- With the score 20-14, American won four straight points to take a 24-14 lead.
- The Eagles hit .480 in the set.
Second Set: SHU 25-23
- In a back-and-forth start to the set, American got back-to-back blocks to take a 10-6 lead.
- Trailing 14-9, SHU ran off four straight points highlighted by a Rianna McNamee kill to cut the deficit to one 14-13.
- SHU took its first lead of the set at 16-15 on a Dole kill, with Nelis following that with one of her own to put the Pioneers up by two.
- American came back with a 6-1 one to take a 22-18 lead.
- The Pioneers took advantage of an Eagles service error, getting kills from Murawinski and Cassandra Lew as well as an ace from Pope to tie the set at 22-22. After an American block made the score 23-22, SHU took the next three points to win the set 25-23.
Third Set: SHU 26-24
- Both teams had 4-0 runs to open the set.
- SHU went on a 6-0 run, capped by kills by Dole and Kiley Ridgway, to take a 12-9 lead.
- American came back with a 7-1 run to take a 16-13 lead.
- SHU took a 17-16 lead on an American error, with the two teams trading points up to 23-23.
- The Pioneers had set point at 24-23 after an error by Meaghan Donahue. The Eagles tied the set at 24-24 on a kill by Hoakalei Dawson. SHU, however, took advantage of a pair of Eagles errors to take the set 26-24 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Fourth Set: American 25-15
- American opened the fourth on a 5-0 run and didn't look back.
- The Eagles took their largest lead at 20-9 after a Pioneer error.
- SHU hit .034 in the set, their lowest percentage in the match.
Fifth Set: American 15-13
- The two sides battled to a 7-7 tie to open the deciding set. Nelis and Dole combined for five kills on the Pioneers' first seven points.
- A Lew service ace capped a three-point SHU run that put the Pioneers ahead 9-7.
- SHU led 10-9 when an Aleksandra Kazala kill sparked a 4-1 run that gave American a 13-11 lead.
- The Pioneers fought off one match point at 14-12 on a Nelis kill, but an Erin Swartz kill gave the Eagles the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
American hit .280 for the match, holding SHU to a .175 mark. The Eagles also had 13 blocks to SHU's six. Kazala led all players with 23 kills.
The Pioneers take on the host Harvard Crimson tomorrow at 1 p.m. before a 4 p.m. match against Stony Brook.
