Pioneers Fall to UMass Lowell on Sunday Afternoon

LOWELL, Mass.— The Sacred Heart women's soccer team closed out its five-game road swing to open the 2017 season with a 1-0 loss to UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers (1-4-0) playing the third contest in five day stretch battled the Riverhawks (2-1-2) in a rainy non-conference matchup at Cushing Field. SHU fired off three shots early into the game, but UMass Lowell had a scoring chance in the 18th minute as Kristi Birgisdottir drew a foul in the box. That set up Rachel Morrier to send in the penalty kick to give the Riverhawks the 1-0 game winner. The Pioneer offense looked to answer in the second half, putting five shots on goal but were unsuccessful against Julia Schneider.
In the even matchup, SHU outshot UMass Lowell, 14-13 with both teams firing six shots on goal. Junior Melanie DaSilva had a team-high four shots and two shots on goal. Juniors Maranda Gibbons, Lindsay Corralo and sophomore Kylie Roberts all had a shot on net. Junior Nicole Sambuco made five stops in goal. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Sambuco made five stops in goal.
The Pioneers host Hartford in the home opener at Park Avenue field on Thursday, September 7 at 3:00 p.m.
First Half
- With the slick turf from the rain, junior Alex Mesropyan missed two shots wide in the opening 20 minutes of the half.
- Junior Alyssa Hyland fired a shot from the left side in the closing seconds of the opening half but it was saved by Schneider.
- SHU outshot Umass Lowell 6-5 through the opening 45 minutes.
Second Half
- Pioneers were unsuccessful on two corner kicks in the 52nd minute.
- DaSilva had two shots on goal in the 61st & 63rd minute. She leads the team with eight shots on goal.
- SHU had two chances miss wide from freshman Taylor Casale and Mesropyan in the 84th minute. Those shots were the final ones for the Pioneers.
