Women's Volleyball Falls to CCSU on the Road, 3-1

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team suffered its second conference loss of the season, as the Pioneers fell to Central Connecticut (22-25, 27-25, 20-25, 15-25) on the road Saturday afternoon.

Alix Polk led Sacred Heart (10-6, 3-2 NEC) with a team-high 12 kills, while Liisel Nelis added 11 kills of her own. Sarah Ciszek paced the Pioneers with a match-high 36 assists, seven digs and five kills in the loss.

First Set: CCSU 25-22

- The two teams were almost even out of the gates, with CCSU holding a narrow 14-11 lead

- SHU scored the next three points to tie the set, capped by a Julia Murawinski and Kiley Ridgway kill

- The Blue Devils scored six of the next seven points to take a 20-15 lead

- The run was halted by another Murawinski and Ridgway block at the net

- SHU was able to cut the deficit to as close as 22-20 after a CCSU attack error, but SHU couldn't get over the hump and fell 25-22 in the first set

Second Set: SHU 27-25

- SHU hopped out to an early 12-3 lead, with five different players recording kills for the Pioneers

- CCSU cut into the Pioneer lead, slowly cutting it to a 17-16 SHU lead

- Murawinski got the Pioneers back on track with a kill that sparked a 6-2 run to give SHU a 23-18 lead

- With SHU holding set point to 20, CCSU scored five points to take a 25-24 lead to force a Pioneers' timeout

- Out of the timeout, Polk recorded a kill, followed by back-to-back attack errors from CCSU for SHU to secure the set win

Third Set: CCSU 25-20

- The two sides played to an early 12-12 tie in the set

- CCSU went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead

- SHU responded with a 5-2 run of its own to cut the deficit to 17-19

- CCSU closed the set with a 6-3 run to take it 25-20

Fourth Set: CCSU 25-15

- SHU found itself in an early 11-5 hole

- CCSU kept its distance, pushing its lead to 20-12

- CCSU maintained momentum and took the set 25-15 and the match 3-1

SHU hit .120 for the match, while Central Connecticut (8-9, 5-1 NEC) had a hit percentage of .262. The Blue Devils registered 46 digs in the match, while SHU recorded 44.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 12, when SHU plays host to NEC-foe St. Francis (Pa.) at 6 p.m.
