
Pioneers Sweep Erskine 3-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team swept visiting Erskine College Monday night, 3-0, at the Pitt Center.
Rob Chatterton had a match-best eight kills, without an error, to pace the Pioneers. SHU had eight players record at least one kills in the match. SHU held a 17-14 edge in digs as well
SHU returns to action at home on Thursday night as its hosts Saint Francis U. The EIVA match begins at 7 p.m.

First Set: SHU, 25-13
- SHU hit .261 in the opening set, behind four kills from Rob Chatterton
- Erskine took an early 2-1 advantage, before the Pioneers rattled off four points to take a 5-1 advantage
- The Flying Fleet momentarily stopped the run, but after a service error, Emerson Waumans served three consecutive aces to make the score 9-3
- A Chatteron ace led to an Erskine timeout and an ace after the break made it a 5-0 SHU run and made the score 16-5
- A Shawn Tischler service error brought the Fleet within eight, 18-10, but Daniel Hermida gave the serve right back with an error of his own
- Taylor Bloomquist served three consecutive aces, leading to a timeout, with the Pioneers in front, 22-10
Second Set: SHU, 25-19
- Erskine jumped out to a 4-2 lead before a 5-1 SHU run, thanks in part to a pair of Blake Cox kills, put SHU in front 7-5
- The Flying Fleet stormed back with six straight points of their own, building an 11-7 lead and maintained a lead until a Bloomquist ace tied the score, 12-12
- Erskine led for the final time, 17-16 following a Pioneer hitting error
- With the score knotted 19-19, the 10th tie of the set, Bloomquist recorded a kill, starting a set ending 5-0 run, capped by an ace to seal the win
Third Set: SHU, 25-17
- The Flying Fleet scored the opening four points of the set, before a Tischler kill put the Pioneers on the board
- Cox snapped an Erskine run with the Pioneers trailing 8-4 and followed with a kill of his own to close the deficit to 8-6
- The Pioneers drew even for the first time at 10-10 and they took their first lead on the next serve, with a Waumans kill on the way to a 13-11 edge
- A Matt Friddle kill and a SHU hitting error knotted the score once again, 13-13
- Waumans knocked down a kill that was followed by a Bloomquist ace to give SHU at 15-13 edge and force a Flying Fleet timeout
- Erskine scored out of the break, before an error, a Chatterton kill and a Waumans ace made the score 18-14 in favor of the host
- The Pioneers closed the set with seven of the last 10 points, to earn the sweep
The Numbers
- The Pioneers dealt out 16 service aces, with six from Bloomquist and five from Waumans
- SHU recorded 9.5 blocks in the match, with 5.5 in the second-set, as Bloomquist and Noah Ricchetti both had five
- SHU hit .291 for the match, holding the Flying Fleet to a .000
- Prior to the match senior Joshua Ayzenberg was named the National Libero of the Week and finished Monday's match with a match-best six digs
