Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell to Northeast Conference foe, Wagner College 14-3 on Thursday afternoon. The Seahawks (13-10, 3-1 NEC) took the series opener at CCSU Baseball Field, outhitting the Pioneers (5-13, 1-3 NEC) 16-11 in the game.
Wagner's offense clicked from the start as a leadoff double by Nick Mascelli followed by an RBI single by Sean Mazzio gave the visitors the early lead. The Seahawks added two runs in the 3rd inning before adding three in the fourth for the 5-0 lead.
After stranding six runners on base through the first three frames, SHU finally got going in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Sophomore Elijah Brown laid down the textbook drag bunt to lead off the inning. Redshirt-sophomore Jake Frasca followed up with an RBI double to the gap in right centerfield to get the Pioneers on the board. Co-captain Cody Doyle drove in Frasca later in the inning with a RBI single to left field for the 5-2 game.
The Seahawks added five runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach before completing its run total with another three runs in the top half of the seventh. SHU added its final run in the bottom half of the eighth inning as senior Anthony Capozziello recorded the one-out RBI double to left centerfield.
Eight starters contributed hits for the Pioneers on the day as co-captain PJ DeFilippo, sophomore Bobby Garbuio and Frasca led the way with multi-hit games.
Freshman Cooper Thompson suffered the loss in his fourth start of the season, surrendering five earned runs in three-and-a-third innings of work. Five pitchers came on in relief for SHU, as senior Ethan Lonardelli, juniors Jackson Aldam, John Cerretani and Nick Rubino along with freshman Thomas Pinto appeared on the bump.
The Pioneers continue the weekend series with Wagner with a 1:00 p.m. start on Friday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field.
