Box Score Thibodaux, LA— The Sacred Heart University baseball team gave up 14 runs in the second inning in a 21-6 defeat to Nicholls State in the mid-week series opener at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (2-10) offense manufactured 11 hits in the second inning to take the early 14-0 lead. The Pioneers (2-5) finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as freshman Daniel Glendon led off the frame with a single. senior Dan Schock followed up with a bomb to left center field on the 3-2 pitch for his third homer of the season.
The long ball continued in the top of the fifth as Isiah Daubon lifted the 1-1 pitch down the right-field line for his first collegiate hit and home run. Nicholls State grabbed a run in the bottom of the fifth as SHU continued to produce in the top half of the sixth.
Sophomore Austin Markmann led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on Elijah Brown's double down the right-field line. After a groundout, Kyle Oliver stepped into the box and delivered the 0-2 pitch to right field for his first career home run.
The Colonels added two more in the bottom of the sixth and four in the seventh to complete the scoring. The Pioneers were outhit 17-8 on the night, producing a season-high three home runs.
Glendon led the seven Pioneers that recorded hits with his first career multi-hit game. Oliver was the top run producer with a career-high three runs batted in.
Freshman Cooper Thompson was handed the loss, allowing three runs in the first inning. Junior Hal Shaw pitched a scoreless inning and two-thirds of relief, striking out two. Sophomore Brendan Coffey made his pitching debut in relief, leading the team with three strikeouts in two innings of work.
SHU concludes its series with Nicholls State on Wednesday with a 7:00 pm start.
