Box Score Thibodaux, La.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team was only able to put together just five hits on Wednesday night as Nicholls State recorded the 10-0 shutout in the series finale on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers (2-6) committed five miscues on the diamond as the Colonels (3-10) pulled away with the win at Ray Didier Field.
Nicholls State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Ethan Valdez recorded the RBI double to left center field. The Colonels added three more in the fourth on a two-run home run by Lee Clark off of freshman Thomas Pinto. Brady Bell added the RBI single to right field to push the score to 4-0.
After earning four walks through the first four innings, SHU finally picked up a hit in the fifth as sophomore Stephen Thibault recorded a leadoff single up the middle. That would be all the Pioneers got as Christian Bahlinger picked up the ground ball double play the next at-bat.
The Colonels added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on one in the sixth and seventh to complete the scoring. SHU recorded two hits in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to get on the scoreboard against the Nicholls State bullpen.
Senior Dan Schock led the Pioneers at the plate with his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Senior PJ DeFilippo, sophomore Austin Markmann, and Thibault contributed the other SHU hits.
Pinto pitched three and a third innings in the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits while striking out three. Fellow freshmen Matt Aufiero and Joe Greco made appearances out of the bullpen. Junior Brent Teller and sophomore Jake Frasca contributed scoreless innings in relief for SHU.
The Pioneers conclude the spring break trip down south with a weekend series against Kennesaw State. The series opens up Friday, March 9 with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
