Pioneers Drop Doubleheader at Mount

Emmitsburg, Md.— The Sacred Heart Baseball team closed out the weekend with a doubleheader defeat to Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers (10-28, 5-12 NEC) were edged by the Mountaineers (16-23, 10-10 NEC) in a 6-5 walk-off in game one before the home team finished off the series sweep at E.T. Straw Stadium with an 8-5 win in game two.

Game One – Mount 6, SHU 5 

SHU got on the scoreboard in the top of the first as co-captain PJ DeFilippo recorded the RBI walk with two outs. The strong hitting continued as SHU loaded up the bases with one out in the second inning. Sophomore Elijah Brown registered the RBI walk before senior Dan Schock recorded the RBI fielder's choice. Junior Kyle Oliver roped a double to right field to give the Pioneers the 4-0 lead.


Mount got on the board in the bottom half of the second on a throwing error by Brown at second base that allowed Minogue to score. The Mountaineers proceeded to score four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to take the 5-4 lead. SHU stringed together three straight two outs singles in the next half inning as DeFilippo recorded the RBI base knock to tie it at 5-5.

The contest remained deadlocked the remaining four and a third innings till Mount picked up the game-winning run on a double down the line by Andrew Malone.

SHU was outhit 11-7 in the opening game, freshman Isiah Daubon and Oliver led the offense with two hits each. In the field, the Pioneers committed three errors to the Mountaineers zero.


Freshman Matt Aufiero surrendered five runs on six hits in the start for the Pioneers. Classmate Cooper Thompson was charged with the loss pitching the remaining four and a third innings in relief. He gave up just five hits while striking out five with the game-winning unearned run against.

Game Two – Mount 8, SHU 5 

Mount carried things over to game two with three two-run innings and one in the fourth to take the 7-0 lead early. SHU finally got on the board in the fifth inning as redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca lined the RBI single into left field with the bases loaded. Oliver followed up in the next at bat with a two-RBI single to left field to bring the score to 7-3.


The Pioneers added one more run in the top of the top of the seventh as freshman Danny Glendon scored from third on a wild pitch. Mount got one run back in the bottom half on a failed pickoff attempt by SHU. A RBI groundout by Trevor Fagan brought the score to the final, 8-5. 

The Mountaineers outhit SHU 12-9 in game two as sophomore Austin Markmann and Oliver paced the lineup with two hits each.

SHU finished the weekend using four pitchers in game two, as freshman Ryan LaMay picked up the loss in the start. Sophomore Brendan Coffey and junior Hal Shaw pitched two and third innings of relief surrendering four combined runs. Redshirt junior Nick Rubino recorded four strikeouts in a hitless inning and two-thirds of relief.

The Pioneers open the month of May with a non-conference matchup at Army West Point on Tuesday, May 1 at 3:00 p.m.
