Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell to Stony Brook University 17-7 on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers (10-30) cut the deficit down to four with a late rally before the Seawolves pulled away with a six-run bottom of the eighth inning at Joe Nathan Field.
SHU struck first in the first inning as senior Dan Schock lined the two-out RBI single up the middle for the first run of the game. Stony Brook was quick to answer scoring 10 runs in the next three innings including a seven-run third to take the commanding lead.
Freshman Trevor Fagan recorded his first career home run in the top of the fifth picking up the two runs batted in with a one-out shot over the left field wall. After Stony Brook got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, the Pioneers recorded another two-run inning. Co-captain PJ DeFilippo scored on a balk after leading off the sixth with a triple before senior Anthony Capozziello put a one-out home run over the left field wall.
SHU recorded its third home run of the game off the bat of Schock as he lifted the two-run shot to left field in the eighth. Stony Brook capped the scoring with six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
The home team outhit the Pioneers 21-7 in the midweek contest. Schock led the Pioneers with two hits and three runs batted in and tie his career single-season high with his ninth home run of the season.
Six pitchers saw action on Wednesday with junior Jackson Aldam and Freshman Matt Aufiero contributing scoreless innings in relief.
The Pioneers continue on the road this weekend with a four-game series against Fairleigh Dickinson University beginning Friday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m.
